Female Dog, Labrador Retriever

Labrador Retriever / Mixed (Short Coat)

Description:

Annabelle is a 3ish yr old Chocolate Lab mix that came into rescue from a shelter in Mississippi after being found as an underweight pregnant stray. The shelter manager contacted rescue because he felt that she was such a sweet and gentle, loving dog that he had to save her. Annabelle ended up having her puppies down south and traveled up north when the pups were one day old. She has been a loving and tolerant mom throughout her journey from Mississippi to Delaware and then to PA. She paid close attention to her puppies but allowed the rescue personnel to handle the pups without hesitation. Annabelle has continued to welcome all visitors to see her and her puppies. Annabelle was hesitant around other dogs at the shelter, so we waited several weeks until introducing her or her puppies to our dogs. Annabelle is a great mom and has spent a lot of time teaching her puppies through play. She has been so tolerant of their sharp puppy teeth when they chew on her legs, tail and ears but if they chew too hard she gently corrects them. It is unknown if Annabelle has ever lived in a home but she did have accidents when she first arrived here. Because of that, Annabelle was crated with the puppies for the first few weeks with us when not being supervised. Now that the pups are older and we are weaning the puppies, she is crated in the same room as her puppies. She has been spending more time away from her pups and up with our dogs since starting to wean the pups. She is working on housebreaking and will paw at the door to let you know she needs to go out. However, if she goes to the back door where no one can see her she will have an accident. We are currently gating her in a room with us to assist with housebreaking. Annabelle is crated overnight and when we go out because she is still working on housebreaking and she also likes to counter-surf looking for food. Annabelle knows “Sit” and is working on “Down” and “Wait”. She has a gentle mouth when taking treats. Annabelle loves to spend time outside exploring the yard or just relaxing in the sun. When she first came to us, she didn’t seem to know what to do with toys. She just recently started to play with toys and carry them around. Annabelle walks well on leash and does not pull. She is a little nervous when cars or other dogs pass us. She will try to avoid walking close to other dogs but will walk toward any people we pass in the hopes that they will pet her! She loves attention and getting pets. She does jump on people. It’s a very gentle jump, but we are trying to discourage it. Possibly due to being a stray when pregnant and not getting enough food, Annabelle will sometimes guard food/treats from our dogs. We can give them treats together without issues. But if some pieces fall on the floor while she is eating, Annabelle will growl if the other dogs get too close. She allows us to touch her or take her food away without any problem. Annabelle gets along fine with our dogs, but she is much more people-focused than dog-focused. We think she would do okay with another dog, though she may be nervous initially. We also think she would be fine with being the only dog. Everyone who meets Annabelle comments on how sweet and gentle she is. Once you look into her warm, friendly eyes, we think you will fall in love, too!
