NOVA was owner surrendered to MOGS approximately 43-45 days pregnant and desperately sick and underweight. She had long-term untreated double ear infections, one that was so bad it took three rounds of antibiotics to cure, and she will never lift that ear again. She had almost 1/3 of her fur missing, along with elephant skin around her hips, due to a massive flea infestation that went untreated. Her skin was torn and scratched from digging at the fleas and that caused systemic bacterial and yeast infections. She had one of the worst parasite infections we'd seen in a long time, and was vomiting and pooping trash for three days. TEMPERAMENTNOVA is a sweet, even-tempered dog that can be quite a big goofball at times. She is truly very smart, and learns most things quickly, as long as she gets adequate exercise daily. Nova is -very- high energy, and can sometimes become overwrought by that, so she is working diligently in her foster home to learn that she does not always need to go 100 mph. She loves to chase balls, either by herself, or with her favorite humans. Nova came to MOGS with zero traing, boundaries or socialization skills, so once her puppies were adopted out, she began working daily on several basic obedience skills, with safety ones being her first focus - sit, down, wait (to stop her from bolting doors and other threshholds) and free (her release word). She can follow both verbal commands and hand signals. She is also crate trained and housebroken. Nova is still a work in progress on a leash. OTHER ANIMALSNova is young, excitable and still unaware of her own size and strength, so has been overwhelming towards all of the other GSD's in her foster home. Until she is significantly more socialized and able to manage her body and space better, she would much prefer to be an only dog in the home, but may be able to be integrated with a male dog of similar size, energy and play style (rough) with multiple, slow introductions under supervision. Nova has a -very- high small prey drive, and cannot be placed in a home with cats, small dogs or other small prey-type animals. PEOPLENova loves people, and craves attention of her foster mom and any other handlers that she has met. She has been okay with teens under controlled meetings, but due to still working to not jump on, run over and run through people, she will not be placed in a home with young children. MEDICAL Nova has been treated for all of the medical conditions that she arrived to the rescue with, and is considered to be healthy, with no other known medical issues at this time. She does have one ear that was so badly infected for so long, that it does not stand up, and flops halfway. Nova was tested for, and is Heartworm Negative. Nova has been vaccinated, has a current rabies tag, is microchipped, and has been spayed. NOVA'S ADOPTION FEE: $350 This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER! We're picky about our adopters. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD? They're not for everyone. They take a lot of time, effort, training. They shed year round. They're big. They scare lots of people. They "mouth" and herd. They're usually strong-willed and stubborn. You have to have references and a home visit. If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home? We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone. You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone. A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car. Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into. Gates are opened. Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!! What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes? New baby? Divorce? Moving? How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up? Will you make a lifetime commitment?
