Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler (Short Coat)

Description:

Location is Somerville, MA. Meet Jimmy ! Or, as we also call him, The Bean, Jimmer, and Him Jim. Jimmy came to ACDRA in 2021 with a broken back leg, but after surgery and rehabilitation, you’d barely know he had an issue! Jimmy is 2 ½ years old and a big guy at 60-65 pounds. He is up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered, and microchipped. He is crate-trained (though it still works best with a treat involved), house-broken, and knows basic commands. His recall is pretty good in the house, but I wouldn’t trust him off leash. For this reason, he’ll need a yard with a fence at least 6 feet high. Jimmy is an absolute love bug and would like nothing more than to be petted forever and ever. In fact, if you stop petting him before he’s ready for that, you may find him indulging in some annoying behaviors, like chewing on dining room chairs. He’s a big chewer – he has about 6 different kongs and loves each and every one. He can’t have stuffed toys, though, as he immediately rips them apart. Jimmy should be an only pet–he does not do well with cats or any other small animals. He’s been known to terrorize the birds in the yard. Additionally, he is dog aggressive, especially on leash, and is a resource guarder. Jimmy should not be in a home with children, either, because he’s both mouthy and jumpy. Since his leg healed, he’s regained the ability to jump and will leap suddenly if you have something in your hand that he’s curious about. Jimmy is crazy-smart and needs to be engaged. He’s very attached to his people, but not so interested in others. We’ve worked with a trainer and he seemed fine with her, but he doesn’t always react well to people on the street during walks. Jimmy ’s ideal adopter would be a single person or couple who are looking for a dog they can do things with like scent work. He will likely benefit from more work with a professional trainer, as well.
