Male Dog, Pug

Pug (Medium Coat)

Description:

Pug Rescue of New England (PRoNE) is a non-profit 501(c)(3), all volunteer foster home based rescue organization. MEET ACHILLES!~ Your new best snuggle buddy Achilles is a super special sweet and cuddly boy who recently arrived in the US from South Korea on a volunteer flight. Estimated to be around 7 years old he was taken in by Pug Rescue of Korea from a shelter this past October. A pug with a heart of gold and a sniffer that detects all kitchen activity at first whiff, food is Achilles love language. He is always ready to supervise your culinary creations from a cozy spot nearby. Achilles has adapted to life in the states very well. His foster family has really been enjoying having him as a house guest, and now he is ready for the final leg of his journey. His forever home. Despite some hind leg mobility limitations, Achilles is full of happy playful puppy energy and enjoys short walks. Especially on grassy areas where his toes are protected from getting scraped up due to foot drop/knuckling. Achilles is crate trained and peacefully spends his nights there. As for potty training, Achilles goes outdoors when taken on a regular schedule. He is still working on 100% success for pooping outdoors, but he is slowly making strides. He may never reach perfection in this department related to his spinal issues. Only one accident in a week though, Achilles is making great strides! Achilles is a great traveler, he did so well on his international flight and the transport traversing 3 states upon arrival. He does well secured into the vehicle with a car seat or harness belt. His favorite play activity is playing fetch with his little yellow tennis balls, but loves human affection and attention most. We have no problems providing that in excess! He has been working on his English and knows "paw and "sit". An ideal home for Achilles would be one with a few or no stairs. He can manage a few with supervision, but any stairways in the home would need to be gated off for his safely. He has been doing very well with the children in his foster home. We will consider families with older, respectful children for Achilles as he needs a gentle touch. Achilles is currently the only pet in his foster home but his foster mom in Korea called him a happy brave boy in that he does not let his disability get in his way. He did not let the other dogs he lived with bully him, but he was not aggressive or alpha at all. He has met a pretty little Cavapoo while here in foster care who was very playful with. We are confident Achilles will be happy to share a home with another small dog with a similar temperament to his. He has not been tested with cats. With respect to Achilles' hind leg weakness, he had an MRI while in the care of Pug Rescue of Korea. It was determined that Achille's non painful condition is related to a growth on his spine. There are a couple of possible diagnosis that could not specifically be ruled out, but there was no surgical intervention indicated. Removal of the lesion will see it return, but the possibility of ascending or descending progression is judged to be low. Achilles gets around quite well at present and physical therapy may be helpful in improving his muscle tone from the current baseline which would be beneficial for him. Achilles adopters should be prepared first to invite the sweetest most loving boy into their hearts and secondly to care for him for his lifetime which may ultimately include the loss of mobility in his hind end and potential use of wheels. He is a little guy. Just 15 lbs., and this is the healthy weight he will need to maintain for his overall health as well as mobility. Beyond this issue, Achilles is in very good health. His teeth are in good shape; his eyes are clear and his vision is good. Achilles doesn't let his disability stop him from loving life and you should not let it stop you from loving him. He is a gentle, passive little love muffin who is happiest when with his people. He will make some lucky adopter the center of his universe, who is ready for that kind of love in their life? ACHILLES' ADOPTION FEE: $500.00 based on is age Achilles travelled to the US with a volunteer accompanying him. There is no international travel fee because of this. ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS FOR ACHILLES: Fenced yard preferred but not required. Daily short walks for strength, stimulation and enrichment Open to exploring physical therapy for improvement in his muscle tone and core strength. Single level primary living space, gated stairs if present Understanding and acceptance that Achilles may never fully have control of his bowel related to inability to sense the urge to defecate and will likely have occasional accidents indoors. Plan for trips outdoors no greater than 5 hour intervals. Pug savvy children aged 10 and older. Achiles could be an only dog, but would love the company of other small dog/s Not cat tested Commitment to Achilles ongoing medical care to include routine wellness exams and treatment for Flea, tick and heartworm prevention.
