Female Dog, Hound

Hound / Mixed (Short Coat)

Description:

Name: Magnolia Sex: Female Estimated Age: About 5 years old Best Guess for Breed: Hound Mix Weight: About 49 lbs Good With: Dogs and people (including kids!). She would do best in a home without cats. About Magnolia: Magnolia came to us from a shelter in North Carolina! According to Magnolia’s foster, she is one of the sweetest dogs she’s ever met. She is a wonderfully calm girl with a spunky side. She enjoys walks and a little play, but for the most part wants to hang out with her humans. She doesn’t care for toys, but she is definitely food motivated. Magnolia is very trainable — she is smart and eager to please. Someone with just a little time will be able to help her further develop her skill at walking on a leash and coming when called. City traffic (buses, construction vehicles) still make her a little nervous, but she loves to interact with other dogs on her walks. She loves human attention and she likes to just lay by you if you’re not giving her attention. She tolerates being crated and is able to settle. She does well by herself if left alone in a room and able to hang out and roam a bit comfortably. She’s not a high energy dog, but she enjoys her walks and her hound instincts come out when there’s a squirrel on the path. As far kids go, I think she just sees them as more people, so she wags her tail and I think just wants pets and love. All in all, We would like to see Magnolia go to a home that is not an apartment due to her hound instincts. Magnolia is a typical sweet and loving hound dog! We love her so much, we compiled this playlist of her favorite songs - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0gEZf1lPEZHmDR7n8zfEOG?si=_0VpeCC_RYyfMAJS_p42vQ. Color Match: ORANGE - Goofball (Socially Motivated) Dog Personality — Will work for what they want, but are not as committed to pursuing their own agenda; these are considered moderate-persistence dogs. Adopter Personality — Interested in doing some training and can provide regular interaction and activity. PERFECT FAMILY: Maggie is great with adults and would probably get along very well with the right dog (but no cats). She is still working on gently taking treats so we don’t recommend super young children. PERFECT HOME: Maggie loves having a fenced-in yard to run around outside and sniff. She would be most happy with humans who work from home at least sometimes, but has easily adapted to spending most days bedded down in her crate with a dog walker break in the middle of the day. She would love a home that allows her to cuddle up on the couch in a blanket. When she’s inside, loud noises and doorbells don’t seem to bother her, but she is somewhat skeptical of the vacuum. EXERCISE NEEDS: Maggie is at her best when she gets a long walk (30-45 mins) in the morning so she can sniff and stretch her legs. On a workday, she gets a shorter walk midday and another one in the evening. She’s still learning leash manners and is interested in squirrels/cats, but is overall a great walking companion. We can’t wait to take her hiking! Sometimes in the evenings or on weekends she gets time in the fenced-in backyard. This routine together with mental exercise (inside training with treats) leaves Maggie bagged out on her bed or the couch. BEHAVIOR IN HOME: Maggie is very food motivated, but don’t let her big brown eyes fool you, she gets plenty of treats! She has been earning her meals on training walks and learning “place” and “stay” inside. Maggie struggles to stay calm at her meal time and is vocal, though she’s making great progress with patient training. Once she’s fed and walked, she understands that the humans get to eat as well and will settle in. We wouldn’t recommend leaving food or wrappers laying around because they’re too tempting, but as long as she’s gotten enough mental/physical stimulation, she hasn’t shown any inclination to chew other things. Maggie hasn’t shown a ton of interest in toys, and her favorite activity seems to be couch napping. CRATE: Maggie is getting better about her crate - she goes in quite willingly, especially for treats. She does a great job sleeping through the night, though once she hears you up and about, she’ll ask to come out and join you. Maggie is still learning how to settle in her crate during times when we’re not at home, but eventually cuddles up for a good nap.
