Description:

Apply to Adopt Me! Magpie is a funny little girl who started her life in the worst possible way – found on the road after having been hit by a car. She had a leg injury and was in enormous pain. This approx. 3yo, 8 1/2lb chihuahua was brought to the shelter where she was in danger of being euthanized as she was showing fearful biting with the staff. X-rays revealed a right hip fracture and what was believed to be a pelvic fracture (later confirmed). The pain she had warranted her behavior at the shelter without question. Magpie was placed with an experienced Lil Rascals foster who was able to help her learn to quickly trust people. At her first vet visit, it was confirmed that the hip fracture required surgery (a femoral head osteotomy/FHO) and that her pelvis was fractured in two places – no surgery available for this, and only time would help the pelvic bones to fuse. She underwent surgery and has done amazingly well post-operatively. She can now walk without a limp but is still working with Florida Veterinary Rehabilitation to gain strength in the affected hind leg. She runs with the other dogs at the dog park and loves it, but does still hold that leg up at times – her veterinarian PT said this is quite normal and will progressively get better. While shy at first, once this girl gains your trust, she is so much fun. If you approach her to pick her up, she rolls onto her back, and you have to scratch her belly first – she then has zero issues with you carrying her. She is cautious but loving. She adores her Boston Terrier foster fur brother and follows his lead – they do play sometimes, chasing one another. She would undoubtedly love having another dog in the home, but it is not 100% necessary if someone has lots of time to dedicate to her. She loves affection in any form. She eats like a champ and is not picky. She will do her business outside if you let her out (a fenced yard would be ideal), but she is also pee pad trained. This resilient girl is a loving, gentle soul who would do best in a home where she can be included in everyday goings-on. Magpie LOVES car rides and she loves to be brushed. She really only barks when the doorbell rings. She enjoys running free and investigating, and she's great at meeting dogs – big or small. She meets humans quite well, though sometimes a bit more hesitant with men at first. A busy home with small children coming and going wouldn't work, as she is a bit on the nervous side. If you want a dog with loads of personality, this is your girl. Small but mighty. Our vet has recommended her spay wait until 6 mos following her FHO surgery, which would be June 2, so she will be adopted with a spay addendum to be spayed at our vet. If you live in the Central Florida/Orlando area and believe you have the perfect home for Magpie, complete and app and tell us more about you.
