Male Dog, Labrador Retriever
Labrador Retriever (Medium Coat)
Description:
Forever home wanted. Meet Lucas! Lucas had a rough past prior to being rescued. He entered the shelter as a stray; where he later was attacked by his kennel mate. It took two staff members with catch poles to get the dog to release Lucas, who thankfully walked away with only a laceration on his right ear…it could’ve been much worse. Despite his past, Lucas has shown to be a loving companion and protector of those he loves. He has some trauma from his attack in the shelter that has developed into dog reactivity, which we have been working on. He has shown that in the right hands he can walk by dogs with not a care in the world, but he needs to know that his handler will protect him, otherwise, he will become protective. With his dog reactivity, we feel Lucas will blossom in a home as the only dog with a family who understands that they need to be in charge as well as be able to set boundaries in order to set Lucas up for success. This boy may not be a candidate for the dog park or dog beach; but he loves his walks, loves his toys, and just wants a family to call his own. The saddest part isn't what happened at the shelter. It's the fact that he is also dealing with two types of cancer: mast cell tumor & spindle cell tumor. We removed the mast cell tumor before it could spread; but unfortunately, soon after, a second lump appeared. Despite his cancer, this boy still has energy for days, has a great appetite, is still very playful and full of life. We know it’s hard for dogs to find the right family when they have to be the only dog, but we are holding on to hope that an understanding family will be open to giving Lucas a chance; no matter how long he has. If interested in meeting Lucas and giving him a chance, please fill out an application at labradorsandfriends.org. Lucas is located in Southern California.
