Male Cat, Domestic Long Hair

Domestic Long Hair (Long Coat)

Description:

To adopt this cat from Black Cat Rescue, please fill out a profile https://blackcatrescue.com/adopt-cat-boston Blair and Gibbons are a bonded pair of male cats, estimated to be 1 year old. Gibbons is partially sighted, and both had a rough start in life. They were initially separated in foster care, but recently reunited, where it has become obvious that they need to stay together. Here’s what their foster volunteers say about them: 1. How would you describe the cat's general personality? - Both boys are fluffy little sweethearts who love exploring the apartment when (they think) no one's looking. Their antics are quite entertaining! - Gibbons is a night owl who's a little more shy and reserved. Blair is cautious but curious and more willing to push himself to explore. 2. Does the cat enjoy being pet? If yes, on what parts of its body does the cat like to be pet? Are there any parts of its body that the cat does NOT like being touched? Does the cat come on your lap? Does the cat like to be held? Does the cat sleep in your bed? Does the cat seek your attention? - Gibbons and Blair have survived the streets, separation, and multiple moves in their short lives. This means they are still learning to trust people and are a little wary of hands / being picked up / handled by humans. - However, neither is naturally aggressive, so they just need some time. They're learning to stay put when we're in the room and get closer and closer to them. We've seen a video of Blair in someone's lap and being petted in the past, so we know he has it in him! 3. Does the cat like to play? What are the cat's favorite games and toys? - Blair is a play-motivated kitty and loves the cat dancer toy! Gibbons likes to play too but is more of a food-motivated cat (a tube of Delectable is the fastest way to this one's heart). - Both love to play with toys/random objects, especially at night and/or when no one's watching. They're also great with other cats! 4. How vocal is the cat? What kinds of sounds does the cat make? - We have heard both boys meowing a couple times, but it is quite infrequent. Usually only when they think no one is around (e.g. when we're in another room). Generally, they're pretty quiet and chill. 5. Does the cat scratch a scratcher? If no, please explain. Does the cat always use the litter box? If no, please explain. - Gibbons and Blair are great roommates :) They have always used their litter box and we've caught them using the scratcher a few times! 6. What food and frequency is the cat currently eating? Is the cat picky about food? What is the cat's favorite treat? - Gibbons and Blair both get a can of wet food a day and ~1/2 cup of dry food each. - We break the wet food into 3-4 smaller feedings throughout the day, but we leave dry food out to graze. - They don't seem picky; we've tried different brands and protein, and the boys have always obliged. - Gibbons love Delectable treats and freeze dried minnows! Blair likes Delectables too but he's more excited about playing. 7. Does the cat ever swat (claws in) at you? If so, under what circumstances? Has the cat ever scratched (claws out) you? Does the cat ever nip (teeth without breaking skin) you? Has the cat ever bitten you (breaking skin)? - Both cats are still learning to trust people, so will get startled by humans who get too close too fast. - They are not naturally aggressive and will want to run/hide instead of fight. Hissing, clawing, biting are a last resort to them. - Hands seem to be more of a trigger for Gibbons (having a tube of Delectable helps though!), but he tolerates objects in his vicinity better so you can get much closer to him that way (e.g. using toys, wands, tongs to deliver treat tubes, etc.). 8. To the best of your knowledge, how does the cat react to new people? Social? Fearful? - Both boys are a little shy when they feel like they're being watched, but they've still managed to explore different parts of the apartment, make friends with the resident cats, and slowly warm up to humans! 9. If you have observed the cat with other animals, please describe how they get on? - Gibbons and Blair have had multiple interactions with our 2 resident cats and they have not hissed or swatted at all. They will likely stay put and observe at first, though Blair will be ready to meet and make cat friends sooner as he is more outgoing. - Both boys are kind and sweet to each other and get along splendidly :) We never hear them quarrel or fight. 10. Does that cat have any cute/quirky traits that aren’t covered by the previous questions? - Gibbons likes to look out the window. He enjoys sunbathing and turning himself into a fluffy little loaf by the windowsill. - Blair acts fearful of humans yet he loves hiding under our bed and semi-follow us to the living room around feeding times. He wants to be in on the fun! 11. In your opinion, what is the best thing about the cat? Why should an adopter choose THIS cat to adopt? - This duo is fun and funny! Both are sweet, silly little souls who will teach you all about patience and trust, and it will be very rewarding. :) It's been a joy helping them on their journey to becoming house cats. Never a dull moment. - They have made great strides in just a few weeks with us, so we know they're ready to love and be loved -- even if they're a little shy at first. 12. What are the cat's challenges and how have you found to best manage them? - Gibbons need space to decompress. You may need to leave him alone for a few hours before he leaves his hiding spot, but it doesn't mean he doesn't like you. - Give him lots of treats (any flavor of Delectable or freeze dried minnows work well) and slow blinking, looking away, or avoiding eye contact altogether may help him feel less on edge. He also loves looking out the window / lounging near one, so a room with a windowsill/ledge or desk will draw him out. - Blair really likes to play and, when he's ready to explore the world outside his room, will roam around the house (though he will still hide a lot). Be sure to leave the door to his room open so he has access to his safe space (and so Gibbons can explore more / come out at night). - Both boys will be really shy at first (e.g. freeze, won't eat if you're in the room, etc.), but with time and the right bribes (Delectables for Gibbons, toys with Blair), they will come out of their shell. - Understand and accept the fact that both may need a little bit of time. :) To learn more about adopting this cat in Massachusetts, please visit www.blackcatrescue.com or fill out an Adoption Profile at https://blackcatrescue.com/adopt-cat-boston.
