Male Cat, Domestic Short Hair
Domestic Short Hair (Short Coat)
Description:
To adopt this cat from Black Cat Rescue, please fill out a profile https://blackcatrescue.com/adopt-cat-boston Anton is a sweet but shy male cat who is estimated to be around 8 years old. Here’s what his foster volunteers say about him: How would you describe the cat's general personality? Anton is a shy, older cat who had a very difficult life on the streets before coming to live with us. While he is still somewhat apprehensive around people, he has really come out of his shell over the past month and is starting to approach us for attention and pets. He has a very sweet personality and never shows any signs of aggression or hostility. He is also very flexible and can live with other cats or even a dog (he lives with both now), but is independent enough that he would probably be fine as a solo cat. Does the cat enjoy being pet? While he was initially resistant and would pull his head back, he now genuinely enjoys pets and no longer finds them to be distressing. If yes, on what parts of its body does the cat like to be pet? His favorite spot is the top of his head. He used to pull away if we tried to pet him but not anymore! Are there any parts of its body that the cat does NOT like being touched? He gets a little funny if you pet him around his ears, and we have never tried petting his abdomen but I wouldn’t recommend it. Does the cat come on your lap? Not yet, but I believe with time and patience he would progress to this. Does the cat like to be held? Not yet. He is starting to seek us to be petted but we have been careful not to push the envelope trying to pick him up. Does the cat sleep in your bed? No, we opened the door to his foster room at night for the first time this week but like most fosters, he chooses to stay in his “safe space” at night for the time being. Does the cat seek your attention? Yes! Despite living his life on the streets he is starting to appreciate human interaction. This took a couple of months to build trust, but he will sometimes approach us seeking pets, especially around meal time. Does the cat like to play? Not particularly, he seems much more food driven than play driven. What are the cat's favorite games and toys? Nothing at the moment, but he loves a warm heating pad in his room! How vocal is the cat? When we first got him, he would meow at night from inside his foster room, but this stopped after a few days. Now he occasionally meows when he is excited, especially close to meal time, but this took a couple of months to build up to. What kinds of sounds does the cat make? He’s got a cute, high pitched meow! Does the cat scratch a scratcher? Not that we have seen, but they are readily available to him in his foster room. Does the cat always use the litter box? Yes. He had one or two urine accidents the first few days we had him but this resolved by the middle of the first week. What food and frequency is the cat currently eating? Anton had very poor dentition when we first started fostering him, requiring a full dental extraction. For this reason, he is on a wet food only diet (one can twice daily), as chewing dry food may cause him discomfort. Is the cat picky about food? His favorite food is Fancy Feast, and shreds are his favorite texture. He prefers seafood over poultry or beef. What is the cat's favorite treat? He likes Churu treats, but it depends on his mood and how hungry he is. Does the cat ever swat (claws in) at you? If so, under what circumstances? No, Anton has never swatted at us. Has the cat ever scratched (claws out) you? No, he has never scratched us. Does the cat ever nip (teeth without breaking skin) you? No, Anton has never nipped us. Has the cat ever bitten you (breaking skin)? No, he has never bitten us. To the best of your knowledge, how does the cat react to new people? Social? Fearful? We have not yet had the chance to introduce Anton to new people, but my guess is that he would probably choose to withdraw, at least for now. He might hide himself in a cat hut or under a cat tower. He did this with us when we first started fostering him, but this has improved a lot as he has learned to trust us. Does that cat have any cute/quirky traits that aren’t covered by the previous questions? Anton has beautiful golden eyes, and is actually slightly crossed eyed which is adorable. He loves to be warm, and is favorite locations are next to the heating vent or on top of the heating pad we keep on the cot in his foster room. In your opinion, what is the best thing about the cat? Why should an adopter choose THIS cat to adopt? When we first started fostering Anton, the biggest concerns were his physical health after living on the streets. He was extremely underweight, his teeth were rotting, he had marks/scars on his nose from encounters with wild animals, and he had never been to a vet before. Under our care, he is now at a healthy weight, no longer experiences dental pain when eating, and is up to date on his health maintenance and vaccines. He is a sweet but shy gentleman looking for a warm, safe atmosphere to live out his golden years. What are the cat's challenges and how have you found to best manage them? His current challenges are thankfully no longer physical, but he is still a shy cat after fending for himself on the streets for so many years. Whoever adopts him will need to understand that he will initially be shy and not seek out attention, but this will improve with time and patience as it has with us. It may take several months before Anton has a strong connection with his adopter, but given what he has been through before this year it will be worth the time and patience!
